19 Jun Maastricht’s Beluga, relaxed two star experience
So now it may seen that a I only frequent Michelin awarded restaurant but naturally nothing can be further from the truth, I’ve just been exceptionally lucky to get a gastronomical delight weekend from my better half, and the climax of the weekend was visiting Beluga in Maastricht. This is really something I’ve been looking forward to for quite some time!
So first let’s talk atmosphere, because at Beluga this is really part of the show as you would expect from a two star restaurant. When you arrive the music is soft and relaxing, then gradually building up as the night continues. By the end of the evening familiar tunes from the 90ies are pumping out quite loud from the speakers and the colour scheme in the restaurant has gone from light to darker night in shades.
Now moving on to the food, as always with this type of establishment, the degustation is a safe bet! You won’t leave Beluga hungry as you warm up your appetite with four different amuses. A personal favourite was the amuse of hummus. Then the menu moves on to three starters including Belugas take on a caprese with the signature dish Hit Me! Never have I eaten such delicious basil sorbet, and this dish was probably my favourite of the evening. After starters we moved on to a perfectly cooked piece of veal, the only downside here is that I’m genuinely not a fan of sweetbreads and the pulled pork served on the side felt a bit apart from the overall dish. Lastly I opted for the cheese platter flowed by coffee and a very original limoncello desert tree. The limoncello tree was also a highlight of the evening, where the chef had prepared five different little desert bites all encompassing of course limoncello. After this i was genuinely full! Before I leave you to try Beluga yourself, which by the way probably is one of the top 5 restaurants in the Netherlands, I would just suggest teeing your menu with the wine pairing. The sommelier is both informed and a treat to listen to as he explains all the wines. Now check out some of my pics of the evening below!
